Concordia’s John Molson Executive Center launched a property management certification in partnership with the Quebec Urban Development Institute (UDI) and the university’s new Jonathan Wener Center for Real Estate. The program will help participants develop the management skills required by real estate professionals who wish to advance their careers.
Founded in 1987, UDI is an independent, not-for-profit organization that brings together major institutional owners, major property developers and managers, as well as industry professionals and businesses in related sectors. It is the most important representative of the commercial real estate industry in Quebec.
The new certification also offers continuing education credits approved by the Self-regulatory body for real estate brokerage in Quebec (OACIQ), the province’s real estate brokerage organization.
“There is no doubt about the important role that real estate professionals play in the development of our cities and communities,” notes Anne-Marie Croteau, Dean of the John Molson School of Management.
“One of the strategic imperatives of our school is to cultivate strong and lasting partnerships with the business world. This new real estate certification will allow experts to deepen their knowledge for the betterment of the communities in which they work.
“A gem for anyone who wants to understand the industry”
The certification, offered in French, focuses on the fundamentals of commercial real estate, with an emphasis on real estate best practices, innovation and sustainability. Through a rich learning path, participants earn certification by completing the Introduction to Real Estate course, five core courses, and a Capstone project.
Additionally, participants can enroll in specific courses based on their personal interests through the program’s à la carte offers.
“Although they come with specialist knowledge in areas such as finance, law and town planning, there is a clear need for a broader knowledge of the real estate sector itself,” explains Michel Deslauriers (BCom 85 ), director of the Jonathan Wener Center and professor of finance. “This program fills that gap by giving participants a better understanding of all the different facets of the industry.
Virginie Chane-Teng is Senior Director of Corporate and Portfolio Risks at the real estate company Ivanhoé Cambridge in Montreal. She recently completed the introductory program course.
“The Introductory Real Estate course is a gem for anyone who wants to understand the industry and its investing aspect,” said Chane-Teng. “The instructor’s experience and approach allowed me to broaden my knowledge and inspired me to make the most of the concepts and ideas I learned.
For Jean-Marc Fournier, President and CEO of UDI, real estate certification was a necessary initiative.
“Its genesis stems from the desire to train and develop the careers of real estate professionals. Providing comprehensive training with recognized experts in the real estate industry is a goal that Concordia and UDI share, ”Fournier said.
“Our industry is changing rapidly and there are many real estate fundamentals that professionals need to better understand, such as real estate development, law, appraisal and planning, to be successful.”
He adds that he thinks the hands-on approach of the program will surprise participants.
“Not only are the instructors respected professionals, they are truly passionate about real estate.”
